How can we help?
The Universidade de Vigo manages the general grants offers announced by the MECD and collaborates with the Xunta de Galicia in the management of its calls.
In addition, the UVigo has its own grants and financial aid programme, to which it allocates a significant part of its budget, aimed at undergraduate, master's and doctoral students. The objectives of this programme are:
- To guarantee access to higher education for people who lack economic resources.
- To guarantee equal access to higher education for students with special educational needs.
- To promote national and international student mobility.
- To complete the students' education with university activities and work placements in companies and institutions that are compatible with their studies.
- To support student participation in different university areas.
- To introduce students to research activities.
Grants management procedure
The procedure has several steps:
Grants FAQ
Here are some answers related to applying for and processing grants. Please note that these answers are generic. You can also consult the grant application forms in the menu on the right.
Depending on your study profile, you can apply for different grants and financial aid.
You can also consult by grant modality in the menu on the right:
- Study grants: intended for funding expenses arising from academic activity.
- Inclusion grants: intended for students who are in a situation of special social or economic need.
- Training grants: intended to complement students' academic training through activities compatible with their studies.
- Mobility grants: intended to finance travel and accommodation expenses.
- Awards: intended for students with excellent academic records.
Calls for the MECD, the Basque Government (intended for students resident in the Basque Country), and the Xunta de Galicia are published on their own webpages. You can consult them from the menu on the right, on the Study Grants page.
Calls for the UVigo’s own grants are published on its online portal (sede electrónica) and on the Grants Portal (https://secretaria.uvigo.gal/uv/web/convocatoria/public/categoria/bolsas) of the university’s webpage. In the terms and conditions for calls, it is particularly important to take note of the following points:
- Requirements: these are conditions that you must meet at the time of application. Failure to comply will result in the application being rejected.
- Incompatibilities: other grants, income or financial resources that cannot be received at the same time as the grant.
- Obligations and justifications: these are mandatory requirements once the grant has been awarded; they must be fulfilled during and at the end of the grant period. They must be taken into account for the payment and justification of the grant. Failure to comply will result in the initiation of reimbursement proceedings.
PROVISIONAL CALENDAR FOR GRANTS CALLS
When?
The deadline is established in the terms and conditions of each call for applications. Applications submitted after the deadline will not be accepted. When the deadline falls on a public holiday at any of the campuses, it will be extended to the next working day (excluding Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays). For information on how to apply for grants from the MECD, Basque Government and Xunta de Galicia, please consult the procedure in the menu on the right-hand side of the Study Grants page.
How?
Using the form on the online portal (https://sede.uvigo.gal/) indicated in the call together with the corresponding documentation.
To submit applications for grants from the MECD, the Basque Government, and the Xunta de Galicia, consult the procedure in the menu on the right on the Study Grants page.
Submitted applications are reviewed. If any document is missing, this is communicated to the applicant by publishing a list on the online portal’s notice board and on the Grants Portal. This will be a provisional list of accepted applications, those excluded and the reason why, and the deadline for submitting any missing documentation or correcting any errors detected.
Documents are submitted via the online form indicated in the call.
Applications are assessed by a selection Committee according to the criteria given in the call. Once the selection is made, the provisional list of grants awarded and refused, with the reason why, is published on the online portal’s notice board and on the Grants Portal. If you do not agree with the proposed selection, you can appeal within the deadline established in the call.
For the appeals form for calls from the MECD, the Basque Government, and the Xunta de Galicia, consult the menu on the right on the Study Grants page.
Once appeals have been studied, the selection Committee raises the proposed decision to the competent body. The decision is published on the online portal’s notice board and on the Grants Portal of the UVigo webpage. The maximum time for a resolution is three months from the final application submission date. If the deadline is reached with no express decision, the grant applied for will be deemed refused, without this exempting the UVigo from its obligation to make a decision.
If you do not agree with the final decision, you can submit an appeal:
- Within one month at the university itself by submitting the appeals form through the online portal (https://sede.uvigo.gal/).
- Within two months through the court for administrative procedures.
For the appeals form for the MECD, the Basque Government, and the Xunta de Galicia, consult the menu on the right on the Study Grants page.
Application to withdraw from the grant must be submitted through the online portal (https://sede.uvigo.gal/) within the deadline and with the consequences indicated in the call for applications. In general, withdrawal involves returning any amounts received or the proportional part of them as established in the terms of the call.
Payment of the grant/economic aid is carried out according to what is established in the call. For study grants, what usually happens is that for payment to be made once there is a final decision. For other grants, payment is usually after the subsidised activity has been justified.
The amount due as grant is deposited in the bank account which is given in the grant application and of which you must be a holder or coholder.
The account must be held at a bank that operates in Spain.
Grants and financial aid are subject to income tax, apart from the following exemptions:
- Study grants:
- Undergraduate and master:
- Enrolment + € 6,000 (to cover general expenses)
- Enrolment + € 18,000 (to cover transport and accommodation expenses)

For grants subject to income tax, the withholding percentage is calculated based on the gross amount and the duration of the scholarship, similar to the way employment contracts are treated (at least 2%). The university makes withholds the tax before payment.
If you are not required to file an income tax return based on the gross amount, you should file one in order to receive a refund of the amounts withheld.
If you want a higher withholding rate to be applied, you must notify the remuneration and social security service.
Justification consists of proving that the aid/grant has been used for the purpose for which it was awarded. This is done in accordance with the provisions of the call for applications. It normally consists of submitting documentation related to the purpose of the activity using the corresponding online form.
The grant will be subject to review and reimbursement of the amounts paid in the event of:
- Non-compliance with the requirements and obligations established in the call.
- Concealing data, altering it, or manipulating the requested information.
- Being the beneficiary of another grant or aid that is incompatible.
